IABr: Brazilian crude steel production grows by 20.3% in first 5 months of 2021

According to data from the Brazilian Steel Institute (IABr), the national crude steel production totaled 14.9 million tons from January to May this year, an increase of 20.3% compared to the same period last year; this figure was the largest production increase in the historical series.
On the other hand, during this period, the domestic sales reached 10 million tons, an increase of 46.4% based on the same comparison base. Meanwhile, the apparent steel consumption in the country was 11.5 million tons in the accumulated up to May of this year, an increase of 50.7% compared to the same period of 2020.
Finally, imports reached 2 million tons through May, an increase of 128.4% over the same period last year, while exports totaled 4.3 million tons and US$3 billion in value, which represented a fall of 13.6% and an increase of 20.5% respectively, compared to the same period last year.
