US forced labor tariff plan spares many Mexican goods
Mexico expects most of its shipments to the US to avoid a proposed 10% tariff after Washington clarified that goods meeting USMCA origin requirements would be excluded from the measure.

According to Mexico’s Ministry of Economy, around 85% of the country’s exports to the US qualify under those rules. The proposed tariff forms part of a broader US review of how trading partners prevent goods tied to forced labor from entering their markets. Economies including Mexico, Canada, the EU, Argentina, and the UK are covered by the plan, while another group of 45 economies could face an additional 12.5% duty.

Mexico said the issue will be discussed with the US Trade Representative during a 45-day consultation period before any final decision is made.

Products already covered by Section 232 measures, such as autos, steel, and aluminum, are excluded
