EU considers extending rules of origin for electric vehicles & batteries with UK

The European Commission had proposed a specific one-off extension of the current rules of origin for electric vehicles and batteries under the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA) until December 31, 2026. It will be voted by the European Council. This proposal will not affect TCA's wider rules of origin, which will be effected by 2027.
The rule of origin for electric vehicles and batteries under the EU-UK TCA was introduced in 2020 to increase investment in the EU's battery manufacturing capacity. However, the Russia-Ukraine war and COVID-19 impacted the global supply chain and new international subsidy support schemes, which further made the development of the European battery ecosystem slower than initially anticipated.
