US’ steel industry supports Foreign Pollution Fee Act

The presidents of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) and the Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA) expressed the opinion to support the Foreign Pollution Fee Act of 2023. The act was introduced to the United States Senate.
In the Foreign Pollution Fee policy details document, the carbon intensity score of American-made aluminum, iron, steel, paper, and other products covered by the act was assigned 1, while China got a 1.7 score and Russia obtained a 3.7 score.
SMA indicated that this kind of proposal was beneficial for the US’ steel industry. The policy can encourage high carbon emission manufacturers to take necessary steps to reduce carbon emissions to obtain the rights to sell products to the market.
