Turkey's government orders some steel mills to suspend production for several days on gas shortages

Turkey's Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources on December 21 ordered some Turkish electric arc furnace steel mills to temporarily suspend operations at their smelters due to some energy supply problems caused by gas shortages.
The production was ordered to be suspended until December 24, and steel mills have begun to comply with the notice. This could have an impact on Turkish mills' overall crude steel production in 2021, which was expected to reach a record high of 40 million tons.
The steel industry accounts for about 20% of Turkey's total energy consumption. A sharp devaluation of the Turkish currency has led to a sharp increase in energy costs, limiting the competitiveness of steel mills in domestic and export markets in 2021. Turkey relies heavily on imported energy, especially natural gas.
