Algoma Steel will build two electric arc furnaces by 2024 in order to increase overall crude steel production capacity and reduce carbon emissions.

Algoma stated that the transition to electric arc furnace steelmaking will increase Algoma’s crude steel production from 2.8 million short tons to 3.7 million short tons and reduce carbon emissions by approximately 70%.

This project will become one of the investments with the greatest effect on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in Canada.

Algoma also stated that the increased crude steel capacity will match the current downstream finishing capacity. The new facility will help expand the supply of steel grades with the new vacuum degassing capacity.
