MMG Ltd. recently stated that if the protests continue in Velille, Chumbivilcas, it may reduce the output of the Las Bambas copper mine.
People in the area have long blocked traffic routes and protested to MMG about environmental issues. Therefore, MMG stated that some of the supply contracts could not be fulfilled. If the problem cannot be resolved as soon as possible, the Las Bambas copper mine will gradually close.
The COVID-19 pandemic caused MMG to cancel Las Bambas' 2020 copper production target. According to statistics from the Peruvian Ministry of Energy and Mining (MEM), copper production from January 2020 to October 2020 has fallen by 21.7% compared to the same period in 2019.
